Entropy Measures vs. Kolmogorov Complexity

چکیده
Kolmogorov complexity and Shannon entropy are conceptually different measures. However, for any recursive probability distribution, the expected value of Kolmogorov complexity equals its Shannon entropy, up to a constant. We study if a similar relationship holds for Rényi and Tsallis entropies of order α, showing that it only holds for α = 1. Regarding a time-bounded analogue relationship, we show that, for some distributions we have a similar result. We prove that, for universal time-bounded distribution m(x), Tsallis and Rényi entropies converge if and only if α is greater than 1. We also establish the uniform continuity of these entropies.

Shannon Entropy vs. Kolmogorov Complexity
Most assertions involving Shannon entropy have their Kolmogorov complexity counterparts. A general theorem of Romashchenko [4] states that every information inequality that is valid in Shannon’s theory is also valid in Kolmogorov’s theory, and vice verse. In this paper we prove that this is no longer true for ∀∃-assertions, exhibiting the first example where the formal analogy between Shannon e...
متن کاملComparing Security Notions of Secret Sharing Schemes
Different security notions of secret sharing schemes have been proposed by different information measures. Entropies, such as Shannon entropy and min entropy, are frequently used in the setting security notions for secret sharing schemes. Different to the entropies, Kolmogorov complexity was also defined and used in study the security of individual instances for secret sharing schemes. This pap...
متن کاملEntropy and the Complexity of Graphs Revisited
This paper presents a taxonomy and overview of approaches to the measurement of graph and network complexity. The taxonomy distinguishes between deterministic (e.g., Kolmogorov complexity) and probabilistic approaches with a view to placing entropy-based probabilistic measurement in context. Entropy-based measurement is the main focus of the paper. Relationships between the different entropy fu...
متن کاملKolmogorov Complexity Based Information Measures Applied to the Analysis of Different River Flow Regimes
We have used the Kolmogorov complexities and the Kolmogorov complexity spectrum to quantify the randomness degree in river flow time series of seven rivers with different regimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, representing their different type of courses, for the period 1965–1986. In particular, we have examined: (i) the Neretva, Bosnia and the Drina (mountain and lowland parts), (ii) the Miljacka ...
متن کاملInformation Distances versus Entropy Metric
Information distance has become an important tool in a wide variety of applications. Various types of information distance have been made over the years. These information distance measures are different from entropy metric, as the former is based on Kolmogorov complexity and the latter on Shannon entropy. However, for any computable probability distributions, up to a constant, the expected val...
